Roman Shades Measurement Instructions
Roman shades can be mounted inside or outside the window frame, depending on your aesthetic goals and functional needs. Please follow the steps below carefully to ensure a perfect fit.
INSIDE MOUNT
- Mounted inside your window’s frame.
- A clean, tailored look that fits neatly within the window frame.
- A minimum depth of 2 inches is required for an inside mount.
Â
Measuring Steps
1. Width – Measure the inside width of the window frame at three points: top, middle, and bottom. Record the narrowest measurement. Round all measurements to the nearest ⅛”. This is your ordering width.
2. Height – Measure the inside height of the window frame at three points: left, center, and right. Record the tallest measurement. Round all measurements to the nearest ⅛”. This is your ordering length.
Workroom Notes:
- Our workroom will automatically deduct 3/8" (1 cm) from the total width to ensure proper fit and smooth operation.
- Do not make your own deductions. Simply submit the actual inside measurements.
- Small light gaps on the sides are normal with inside mounts due to fabric clearance.
- For better light control and full coverage, consider an outside mount.
OUTSIDE MOUNT
- Mounted outside or on top of the window’s frame
-A bold, framed look that maximizes light blockage and visually enlarges the window.
-There is no minimum depth requirement
Â
Measuring Steps:
1. Width – Measure the full width of the window frame, then add 4 to 6 inches (2–3" each side) to allow for adequate side coverage. This is your ordering width and will be the overall measurement of the shade.
2. Height – Measure the height of the area you wish to cover. This is your ordering length. For optimal light blockage, we suggest the drop extend at least 4" below the window frame.
Â
Workroom Notes:
- Round down to the nearest 1/8 inch for width; round up for height.
- Our outside-mounted Roman shades include extra fabric extensions at the top to conceal the headrail and mounting hardware.
- Be sure to center the shade evenly over the window when installing.

Pro Tips for Designers
- For windows with molding or trim, include them in the outside mount width to create a framed visual effect.
- Always use a steel tape measure for accuracy.
- If ordering multiple shades in the same room, ensure consistent mount types and measurements for a cohesive look.
